Medicaid is a joint federal and state health insurance program for people with limited income, including children, pregnant women, parents, seniors, and people with disabilities. In Texas, most Medicaid members receive care through managed care plans rather than traditional fee-for-service coverage.
There are a few main programs under Texas Medicaid:
- STAR: the main Medicaid managed care program for low-income children, pregnant women, and some adults
- CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program): low-cost coverage for children in families who earn too much for Medicaid but can’t afford private insurance
- STAR Kids / STAR+PLUS: Medicaid programs for children and adults with disabilities or long-term care needs
A Medicaid primary care provider treats the everyday health needs of patients on Medicaid or CHIP, such as:
- Well-child checkups and school or sports physicals
- Cold, flu, and respiratory infections
- Asthma and allergy care
- Diabetes and high blood pressure management
- Minor injuries, cuts, and sprains
- Vaccinations and immunizations
- Preventive screenings and annual physicals
Ongoing management of chronic conditions
Lone Star Family Care works with Texas Medicaid members, we recommend confirming your specific benefits before your visit. You can do this two ways:
- Call the member services number on the back of your Medicaid or CHIP card and ask whether Lone Star Family Care is in-network for your plan.
- Call our office directly at our front desk team can help verify your coverage before you come in.
A primary care provider (PCP) is who you see for regular checkups, ongoing health conditions, physicals, vaccinations, and preventive screenings. Texas Medicaid managed care plans generally ask you to designate a PCP so your care stays coordinated.
Urgent care is for problems that need attention soon but aren’t life-threatening — a fever, a sprained ankle, a bad cough, or a minor cut that needs stitches. No appointment is required, and no referral is needed.
At Lone Star Family Care, we offer both. Some Medicaid patients use us as their regular PCP; others come to us specifically for same-day urgent care when their regular doctor isn’t available. Either way, you’re seen by the same experienced provider.
Our Irving clinic handles most non-emergency health concerns for patients of all ages, including:
- Cold, flu, and respiratory infections
- Fevers, sore throat, and ear infections
- Minor cuts, sprains, and injuries
- Nausea, vomiting, and stomach illness
- Well-child checkups and school/sports physicals
- Sinus infections and allergies
- Routine physicals and preventive visits
- Chronic condition management for existing patients
To help your visit go smoothly as a Medicaid or CHIP member, please bring:
- Your current Medicaid or CHIP card
- A valid photo ID (or the child’s Medicaid ID for pediatric visits)
- A list of any current medications
- Your primary care provider’s name, if your plan requires you to designate one
